Many students have that favorite character in either a movie, cartoon or video game that they wish they could become even just for a day.

Two juniors made that wish come true for themselves.

Emily Nelson and Serene Clements are able to do this through Cosplay.

Cosplay is the art of re-creating the persona of characters from fiction by dressing as them.

Cosplay has been rising to the scene and becoming more popular as more and more people are attending conventions all around the world dressed as their favorite characters.

Conventions are held for Cosplayers to come together, meet new people, and even compete and win money for having the best cosplay.

Nelson and Clements have just begun their Cosplay endeavors and have already attended conventions such as Anime Expo, Anime LA, and Comikaze, all held in Los Angeles.

Their most recent convention they attended was Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 3- July 6.

“I love being able to become somebody that I look up to, even if they are fiction,” said Clements.

The Cosplayers that attend conventions are very passionate and dedicated to re-creating their favorite characters.

“Everyone has similar interests and the community is very welcoming; you’re not afraid to be yourself,” Nelson said.

Nelson and Clements have already re-created several characters. These include Panty and Stocking Anarchy from the anime “Panty and Stocking” and Yuno Gasai from the anime “Mirai Nikki”.

The two say that anybody can Cosplay, no matter what they are into.

“You find a character that you really like and must have the confidence to become them,” Nelson said.

The artistic and creative ability to make the costumes is extremely impressive.

“We do closet Cosplays, which takes normal, everyday clothes and transforms them into that character’s costume,” Clements said.

“It can normally take about a month depending on the Cosplay,” said Nelson.

Both girls say that Cosplay has been something they have been in love with ever since they were introduced to it.

“I have always looked up to Cosplayers such as Jessica Nigri,” said Nelson.

Jessica Nigri is one of many iconic professional Cosplayers who make a living by competing and modeling for Cosplay and conventions. Although Nelson and Clements are only just starting out in Cosplay, they hope to grow and become more advanced in this hobby and passion and continue to Cosplay more characters and personas.
