Suarez, Garcia win Midwinter titles

Students went “mad” at the Mad Tea Party-themed Midwinter dance Jan. 31 at Grand Valley Ballroom in Moreno Valley.

Winning king and queen titles were senior Dino Suarez, representing MEChA,  and senior Sabrina Garcia, representing the Golden Girls dance team.

“I was surprised at first because of all the other guys running but it made a good night even better,” said Suarez.

“I was so nervous walking up on the stage and, when they finally announced king and queen, I didn’t even hear my name being called. When my friends were cheering and screaming my name, that’s when I realized I won,” said Garica.

Other king nominees and the groups they represent were seniors Gabe Magana, theater; Jarom Meza, boys soccer; Malik Patterson, ASB; Noel Ruiz, MEChA; Erin Shroeder, ABC; Michael Shanley, All-Male Hip Hop;  Vincent Subia, Gov Club; Mark Valdovinos, Key Club; Andrew Reyes, swim; Jake Munksgaard, golf; Jesus Macias, wrestling; Peter Girgis, boys water polo; Kevin Garcia, STEM; Boone Elkins, Interact; Isaac Cooley, AHS Bigs; Dapree Doyle, AP Environmental Science (APES); and Nikolai Alexander, AFJROTC.

Also vying for the title of queen and the organizations they represent were seniors Brooke Haro, CSF; Zoe Holeman, Red Cross; Mariah Lappas, cross country; Meichen Lin, National Honor Society (NHS); Alyssa Lujan, ASB; Dazhane McCullough, Golden Girls; Maria Ochoa, girls soccer; Abigail Ortega, theater; Samantha Ortiz, girls soccer; Kaitlin Overturf, newspaper; Jazmin Rivas, STEM; Gloria Tenorio, MEChA; Destyni Vega, newspaper; Lauren Wilson, Gay Straight Alliance (GSA); Yvonne Wilson, GSA: Stephanie Martinez, Key Club; Gabriella Aguirre, golf; Maggie Cervantes, Gov Club; and Jasmine Rocha, girls water polo.

Nominees for prince were freshmen Jacob Olsen, boys water polo, and Zach Overturf, ASB; sophomores Nick Durkee, ASB,  and Jose Gomez, boys soccer; and juniors Edward Anica, choir; Xander McIntosh, All-Male Hip Hop; Giovanni Ruiz, CS Chem Club; and Nick Caton, CSF and Envirothon.

Winning as Midwinter prince was Nick Durkee, who said “I was shocked that I won because everyone else had a lot of spirit but kind of knew I won.”

Princess nominees were freshmen Samara Thorton, cheer; sophomores Rachel Ornelas, cross country; Joanna Areizaga, ACS Chem Club and NHS; Dianne Steinmetz, Interact; and Brittney Zelada, cheer; juniors Emileigh Conaway, Envirothon; Jade Felix, AFJROTC; Emily Fisher, girls water polo; Amaris Garcia, choir; Leticia Guerra-Martinez, APES; Dilan Cortes, AP Spanish; Aujula’e Mercadel, cheer; Amberline Murillo, cheer; Vanessa Sanchez, ABC; Emily Nelson, swim/dive team; Alicia McCloskey, AHS Bigs; and Daniella Uriostegui, AP Spanish.

Midwinter princess junior Emileigh Conaway was shocked and beyond happy when she heard her name being called.

“While I was standing there, I was just thinking about how great of a week it had been,” said Conway. “I had no clue I was going to win.”
