Students find passion in many places throughout their lives, be it in art, theater or even music.
For Hannah Dickenson, junior, music is where she finds her passion.
Dickenson can play several instruments including: flute, played for five years; oboe, played for two years; bassoon, played for two years; and piano, played for six years.
“In third grade my aunt gave me a flute so I was just running around for the next three years trying to play something,” said Dickenson.
Besides actively playing four instruments, she has also had the opportunity to play saxophone and alto flute but did not continue playing them.
Currently Dickenson plays oboe in AHS’s concert band and flute during the marching season. She also plays synthesizer in the band’s competitive drum line.
Once every two weeks Dickenson takes oboe lessons to improve her skills.
Along with band, Dickenson is also a part of the AHS choir.
“I tried out for choir in middle school as a ‘Hey why not’ whim not really planning to make it,” said Dickenson.
For inspiration in her musical life, Dickenson looks to the professionals.
“I listen to a lot of film scores and professional orchestras. I always think of how the professionals are sight reading all of that music perfectly and I strive to be like that,” said Dickenson.
Dickenson’s musical passion isn’t tied only to school, though. She is an active participant in honor bands and organizations brought about by her church, Magnolia Presbyterian.
She played in its handbell orchestra for two years when it was active, sings at some services, and was a part of its Christmas musical called “Junction Cafe” this past winter.
She has participated in the King Karl King honor band for three years, the John Phillip Sousa honor band for one year, and the RUSD honor band for two years.
With so many activities in and outside of school it may seem hard to keep a stress free life but Dickenson looks at it optimistically.
“I just take it one day at a time and make sure there is a lot of communication,” said Dickenson.
